Difference between Irish moss and sea moss

  • Irish moss, scientifically known as Chondrus crispus, grows in colder, temperate waters of the North Atlantic. It has a flat, fan-like shape and typically exhibits darker colors like deep red, dark purple, or green.
  • Sea moss, or Genus Gracilaria, grows in warmer regions and has a thin, finger-like appearance. It's more commonly found in shades like gold, yellow, or purple. While botanically they are the same (Chondrus crispus), they have different environmental growing conditions which can affect their nutrient composition
